The age-related decrease in fertility is typically attributed to a decline in egg quality and sperm quality. As we age, the mitochondria in our reproductive systems become less effective at producing Adenosine Triphosphate or ATP.
ATP is produced by the mitochondria inside our cells. Most of the cells in our bodies contain around 2000 mitochondria. However, the oocyte (the egg cell) contains 600,000 mitochondria.
Since 2012, a group of clinics in Denmark and Norway have been offering PhotoBioModulation (PBM), also known as Low Level Laser Therapy (LLLT) to increase the chances of pregnancy in people who ovulate. In addition to the data resulting from the clinics in Denmark and Norway, numerous studies have shown that when cells are exposed to laser light, the mitochondria within the cells start producing more ATP. Exposing the oocyte to laser light can directly increase the level of ATP and improve the chances of conceiving.
In addition to stimulating mitochondrial activity to repair the effects of aging eggs and sperm, there are additional benefits to using laser light over the low abdomen that can enhance fertility, such as:
- Improving blood flow
- Regulating inflammation
- Reducing pain and muscle tension
- Softening scar tissue
Research:
In a Japanese study, 74 people who ovulate with severe infertility in whom assisted reproductive technology (ART) had been unsuccessful participated. PBM was used with or without other ART approaches. Based on successful outcomes, the study was then extended to 701 patients. Pregnancy was achieved in the first part of the trial in 16 patients (21.7% of 74) of whom 11 (68%) achieved successful live delivery. In the extended trial, pregnancy was achieved in 156 (22.3% of 701) with 79 live deliveries (50.1%).
In 2016, a study in Denmark showed a 66% pregnancy rate with PBM treatment for 1-3 months in people ovulate who had struggled with infertility. They had all tried, diet, exercise, counseling, hormonal treatments, IVF, ICSI to get pregnant without result.
Another study in Denmark showed improvement in sperm counts by 2-5 times in people with previously low counts. After treatment with PBM, sperm counts increased from 2 million/mL to more than 40 million/mL.
In another study, Dr. K. Nakamura of Japan has been collecting 10 plus years of clinical data on combining PMB and acupuncture for fertility. He has found an increase in the blastocyst reaching rate (BRR) for people with previous failed IVF cycles when combining PBM, moxibustion and acupuncture for 3 to 6 months.
